How to Choose Hotel Blackout Curtains: 7 Practical Checks
Blackout curtains are part of the sleep product a hotel guest pays for. A proper three-pass blackout fabric blocks 99-100% of incoming light. Here is the 7-point checklist we use with hotel clients at MERCI Decor.
1. Check the real blackout level
"Blackout" on a label can mean anything from 70% dimout to full 100% light exclusion. Ask for the tested shading rate: bedroom curtains for hotels should reach 99-100% with a three-pass coated fabric or a woven blackout construction. Pair the fabric with a wraparound track or side channels, because most light leakage happens at the edges, not through the fabric.
2. Verify fire-retardant certification
Hospitality projects normally require flame-retardant curtains by regulation or by brand standard. The common references are NFPA 701 in the United States, BS 5867 Part 2 in the UK, and EN 13773 in the EU. Prefer permanently flame-retardant (inherent FR) yarns over sprayed coatings - the protection survives repeated washing.
3. Choose fabric weight and drape for the room
Heavier fabrics (260-400 g/m2) hang straighter, insulate better and feel heavier in the hand; lighter fabrics suit layered schemes with a separate sheer. Judge fabrics from a large sample hung against the window. A flat swatch on a table hides the drape.
4. Decide on motorization early
Motorized tracks need wiring positions agreed before interior finishing. Quiet motors (under about 35 dB), group control per room type, and a manual override are the three specs hotels ask for most. Retrofitting cable routes after decoration costs far more than planning them upfront.
5. Measure for full coverage
Plan 10-15% extra width for proper fullness, side returns that bring the curtain back to the wall, and an overlap at the center meeting point. For floor-to-ceiling windows, confirm track load capacity and ceiling fixing points in advance.
6. Plan for cleaning and durability
Hotel curtains are washed far more often than residential ones. Confirm shrinkage tolerance (under 3% is a practical benchmark), colorfastness, and whether the blackout coating tolerates the hotel laundry process you actually use.
7. Ask for samples and a mock-up room
Before a full order, test one mock-up room: hang the actual fabric, run the motor, close the curtains at midday and check edge leakage from inside. A one-room test protects a several-hundred-room investment.
